October 2011
There never seems to be enough hours in a day.
For me, September always flies by as everyone gets back into the routine of work, school and the lessons, and practices that fill the busy Monday –Friday work week. Before I know it, October is upon me and what I lovingly refer to as “The Silly Season”. I don’t mean make funny faces and play pranks kind of silly (although truth be told we have our fair share of that around here too!), I mean the kind of silly that happens when from the beginning of October to the start of the New Year, we have three birthdays to celebrate. The celebrations are annual, so you’d think I’d be ready for them, but no. Ultimately, October begins and I’m alarmed at how “The Silly Season” has managed to, once again, sneak up on me. Time to dig out the cookbooks and treasured magazine collection to find a cake for my son’s birthday and the next Thanksgiving menu.
The freezer may be filled with wrapped loaves of rich, dark, brown sugary Zucchini Bread, but, by no means, am I finished with my love for squash.
Over the last few weeks, I have roasted a spaghetti squash to serve with the Dee’Lectable Marinara with Sausage, which was a nice change from pasta and will definitely be offered as a side to the dish when you choose it as one of your menu items. This idea of serving sausage and squash together actually inspired the development of a Stuffed Winter Squash recipe. I used acorn squash and Oktoberfest sausages purchased from Halenda’s (a local butcher/grocer here in Oshawa that makes their own fresh gluten free sausages) and pairing it with quinoa is a delicious nutty alternative to using rice. I even added chunks of acorn squash together with carrots to make a wonderfully satisfying Curried Squash and Carrot Soup.

However, you can’t talk squash without including the mama of all squashes…the pumpkin.
I love pumpkins. As a kid, I thought finding the right one to carve into your best Jack-O-Lantern was the sole purpose of this colourful gourd. Of course I knew about pumpkin pie, but those were bought at a store and I’d never known anyone to buy a pumpkin as an ingredient, for anything. As a grown up, I know better! I currently have pumpkin pie; muffin and cake recipes all dancing through my head. My newest creation is Dairy Free Pumpkin Spice Ice “Cream” which will of course, be one of my Thanksgiving desserts, and it will also be a featured Dee’Lectables menu item for the month of October.
For every cook day happening in October, you’ll get a complimentary batch of Dee’Lectable Dairy Free Pumpkin Spice Ice ‘Cream”

Happy Thanksgiving Everyone!

Hi Denise it's Melody from Goodlife! I was the one who you gave your complimentary cookies to at the front desk. I just wanted to first off say thanks again for giving us this great treat which we all enjoyed! It's always puts a smile on our face when someone thinks of us like that. Secondly, I wanted to know how we can get some more of your cookies, they are sooo good! One of our personal trainers actually has a gluten allergy so she was especially excited when she had them and said they were the best gluten-free cookies she's ever had!
Thanks again hope to see you soon,
Melody :)

Hi Denise:
Brian from Good Life reporting Zucchini loaf was super good.

I removed your tag and gave a slice to my wife. She really liked it and said she would not have known it was gluten free.

Overall very "dee’licious indeed - thanks for the snack.
